The 6th i-Blog Philippine Blogging Summit kicked off yesterday at the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP) Malcolm Theater, with around 200 bloggers and online advertisers converging to discuss the current trends in the blogosphere regarding online marketing and advertising.

The summit, sponsored by the UP College of Law, Vibal Foundation, and 88DB.com, among others, opened with an opening speech from lawyer/blogger JJ Disini, who described the day’s theme, “How to make business through blogging.”

Business and advertising blogger Janette Toral then started the first discussion of the day, tackling the theme “Blogging for business: Tapping bloggers to generate buzz,” where she emphasized the qualities of uniqueness and creativity in pursuing business ventures within the blogosphere.

Tech blogger Abe Olandres next gave a general overview on advertising in blogs, where he presented the pros and cons of popular advertising schemes used in blogs, particularly link ads and ad networks. He also revealed the potentially huge profits a blogger can earn if he ventures in advertising on blogs.

In connection with Olandres’ topic, business blogger Francis Gary Viray presented tips on how to lure online advertisers by increasing site hits and visits through search engine optimization (SEO). SEO involves mechanisms to improve the volume of traffic to a website or blog, depending on specific search engines.

Blog Watch contributor and media blogger Carlo Ople meanwhile discussed both positive and negative effects of online advertising on blogs, and how blog buzz are measured, while romance blogger Diana Paterno, who described herself as a “non-techie” blogger, described how a blogger and an advertiser can attain a “win-win relationship.” Blogger Manuel Viloria meanwhile delved into the topic “Online Attraction Marketing,” where he expounded on various online marketing strategies.

The legal concerns of bloggers were also discussed yesterday, with lawyer/blogger Emerson Banez giving a crash course on libel, copyright, and patent laws. He also discussed the dynamics of using Creative Commons licensing and attribution, which is used by the Philippine Online Chronicles (POC) in the attribution of photos and other creative works.

Today’s IBlog session will tackle topics on video/photo blogging, mobile blogging, and political blogging, particularly for the 2010 elections.

What was earlier perceived as a mere “journal” on the internet or an avenue for teenage angst, Blogging (or Web Logging) has evolved into a vital tool in shaping the consciousness of society.

A recent study conducted by popular internet search engine Yahoo! and market research firm Nielsen on the internet habits of Filipinos showed that 42 percent of an estimated 20 million internet users rely primarily on blogs for information, while 32 percent of the respondents said they have worked on blogs and social networking sites themselves.

Joining the efforts in introducing the wonders of blogging to the Filipino everyman, Vibal Foundation, Inc. and its media website, The Philippine Online Chronicles sponsor this year’s Iblog: The 6th Philippine Blogging Summit to be held at the Malcolm Theater, University of the Philippines, Diliman Quezon City on April 16 and 17, 8:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Iblog is an annual conference of Pinoy bloggers which was initiated in 2005. Unlike the previous bloggers convention, Iblog6 will run for two days – the first day will tackle the lucrative aspect of blogging and how it could help businessmen promote their products and services on the web. It will feature lectures from renowned bloggers/entrepreneurs such as Janette Toral, Abe Olandes, Francis Gary Viray and many more.

On day two, expert bloggers such as Ms. Noemi Lardizabal-Dado, Marck Ronald Rimorin and Juned Sunido will share their experiences and useful tips to aspiring bloggers.

Whether you are a businessman, an internet junkie or just a typical netizen wanting to learn a thing or two about blogging, then Iblog6 is the perfect opportunity to be a part of a vast, growing community called the “blogosphere.”

Admission is free. Free meals await the first 250 early registrants (those who will come on or before 9:00 a.m.)

See you there!

***

Blogging is no longer only a personal outlet of expression – it has now become the most potent tool in shaping public awareness on important social issues.

A recent study on voter demographics show that 42 percent of an estimated 20 million Filipino internet users rely primarily on blogs for information.

Sensing the need for a “better-educated” discussion of electoral issues on the web, bloggers and media guests gathered at the Max’s Restaurant in Makati City today to formally launch Blogwatch – a joint online venture of the Vibal Foundation – mainly of its news website, The Philippine Online Chronicles – and a group of bloggers led by project editor, Noemi Lardizabal-Dado.

“The aim of Blogwatch is to give Filipinos, especially the youth, exactly what they need when they need it, and to try to produce a voter-body in time for the 2010 elections,” read a press statement.

Some of the most read articles on the website are tutorials on the automated elections, campaign spending and other features that offer a hindsight into the most relevant electoral issues today.

Dado described her network of bloggers as one “comprising of diverse personalities and interests.”

The writers have been handpicked through endorsements within blogging circles, Dado explained of the selection process. “They are mostly personal bloggers,” she said, “The youngest being only 21 and the oldest 66.”

Dado revealed that she is currently in the talks with Commission on Elections Spokesperson James Jimenez on a possible tie-up with BagongBotante, the online forum of the poll body.

“We are also looking into sealing a partnership with the PPCRV (Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting) as well as with [the website] Political Arena,” she shared.

Blogwatch can also be accessed through social networking site, Facebook and as well as on Plurk and Twitter.
