April 07, 2007 was the released date of the new batch of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholars. The new batch, as announced by DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro, is composed of 2 876 high school graduates who took the 2007 S&T Scholarship Examination and have qualified for the scholarship awards given by DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI). According to Sec. Alabastro, this year’s qualifiers were selected from among the 17 118 examinees belonging to the top 5% of the Batch 2007 graduates from various regions nationwide. 2 510 or 87% of the total examinees qualified for RA 7687 Science and Technology Scholarships, while the remaining 13% or 366 will be awarded with DOST-SEI Merit Scholarships. The scholars must enroll in 4 or 5-year baccalaureate degree courses identified as priority fields in science and technology only.
Being a DOST Scholar during my college years was really a hard task. I guess, it is much harder than those tasks you see on television these days — the one those reality shows are depicting us. But the best things about being a scholar, a DOST Scholar in particular, were the privileges I had gotten from it. Yes, I was a former DOST Scholar during my college years, and I am still up to now. I guess no one can ever take that away from me.
March, 1999, when my high school classmate told me he saw my name in the list, and eight names of my classmates, of the official DOST Scholarship Exam Passer, I did not believe him at first. I thought it was a joke, just to lighten up the ambiance and cool things down due to the heat of the sun during our graduation practice that day. I cannot forget his poker face and his grin when he said that. But of course, I was hoping he wasn’t joking around that time because I knew back then that the DOST Scholarship was my only ticket to college. And so, I hurriedly went out of the school premises and bought myself a copy of the Manila Bulletin that day to see for myself. I knew it! My classmate wasn’t joking around! “Yatta!”, as that popular Hollywood series goes. “I did it!” I did pass the test!
