A virtual gathering of ‘who’s who’ in the fields of Philippine and Asia-Pacific history were on hand at the Legazpi Room of the Hotel Intercontinental Manila last November 23, 2006 to witness the unveiling of Filipiniana.net, the newest and one of the most comprehensive research portals on Philippine studies today.
The distinguished line-up of guests included Reynaldo Ileto, brilliant author of Pasyon and Revolution and professor of history at the National University of Singapore; and his NUS colleagues, Timothy Barnard, professor of history, and Anthony Reid, author of the two-volume Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce.
Also in attendance were Bernardita Churchill, historian and president of the Philippine National Historical Society; Ateneo de Manila’s Filomeno V. Aguilar, who is also president of the Philippine Social Science Council, Fr. Jose Cruz, S.J., dean of the Social Sciences Department, and Fr. Jose S. Andaya, noted author and historian; Jaime B. Veneracion, the eminent professor of history from the University of the Philippines in Diliman; Alejandro and Georgina Padilla Zobel de Ayala, publishers of 81 Years of Premio Zobel de Ayala; Leonard and Barbara Andaya, professors at the University of Hawaii; and Ramon Recheter, ambassador of Palau to the Philippines.
Guests were welcomed by Filipiniana.net founder Esther A. Vibal; Gaspar Vibal, publisher; Carlos Madrid, editor-in-chief; and the rest of the Filnet team. Highlights of the cocktail event included the premiere of Filipiniana.net’s new video ad and a walk-through of the new website.
